    The Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) at the American University of Beirut was recently awarded a grant from The MasterCard Foundation to support undergraduate scholarships for students who come from disadvantaged backgrounds.

    FHS is seeking an energetic program officer who displays a strong commitment to equality of opportunity in higher education and social justice values. The program officer is expected to develop and implement a proactive strategy to attract public high school graduates who reside in Lebanon and come from disadvantaged backgrounds into the FHS undergraduate program. Candidates with academic backgrounds in public health, sociology, education, social marketing or related fields are invited to apply.

    Duties and responsibilities
    a. Develop a strategy to recruit high school students who come from disadvantaged backgrounds into the two FHS undergraduate programs – Environmental Health and Medical Laboratory Sciences.
    b. Develop a database for all public, private, and semi-private high schools in Lebanon.
    c. Coordinate with the Office of Admissions and the University Prepartory Program the student recruitment process, which includes but is not limited to carrying out visits to high schools throughout Lebanon and participating in school fairs.
    d. Oversee the execution of different publications for FHS’s programs and activities including undergraduate recruitment activities.
    e. Receive and guide The MasterCard Foundation scholarship students, in coordination with the registration advisors of the Environmental Health and Medical Laboratory Sciences programs, on the academic requirements and preparation for SAT exams.
    f. Follow-up on the scholarship students’ academic performance and personal well-being.
    g. Develop an alumni network for the alumni of this scholarhsip program.
    h. Coordinate and supervise volunteer activities of the scholarship students during the regular academic year and in the summer.
    i. Prepare interim and progress reports related to the students’ academic status, and their feedback on the programs.
    j. Evaluate the process of recruitment, admission, student status and recommend any changes to the relevant FHS Faculty Advisory Committee.

    Qualifications

    Education
    A masters degree in public health, sociology, education, social marketing or related fields.


    Experience
    For Holders of Masters Degrees, a minimum of 7 years experience in academic recruitment strategies, students’ follow up and advising or community promotion projects.
    Or

    A minimum of 12 years experience for BS holders of the same disciplines

    Extensive experience in managing programs in academic institutions.
    Knowledge of the public school system in Lebanon is of added value.

    Good management skills
    Strategic and independent thinker
    Good communicator in diverse settings
    Fluent in Arabic and English (spoken and written)
    Good skills in report writing (in English)

    Special requirements
    Will be involved in frequent visits to different geographical areas in Lebanon
    Irregular working hours at specific times

    Full time research assistant needed at the Epidemiology and Population Health Department

    A full time Research Assistant is needed for a 2- year NIH study on Dementia in Lebanon.
    The specific aims of the study are to validate in the Arabic language and cultural context diagnostic scales for dementia and , second, to carry out a pilot study of about 500 subjects in two governorates of Lebanon (Beirut and Nabatieh) to measure prevalence of dementia.

    Specific requirements

    • MS in Epidemiology OR MPH (Epidemiology and biostatistics) OR MS Psychology OR BS Public Health with at least one year of work experience
    • Strong command of English and Arabic languages
    • Good writing skills
    • Computer proficiency in commonly used software packages including Microsoft office, internet explorer and SPSS or other statistical softwares
    • Good interpersonal and communication skills
    • Strong organizational skills
